Male Plastic Surgery Procedures on the Rise

Although plastic surgery is an industry dominated by female patients, the number of males undergoing cosmetic procedures has dramatically increased over the years. According to statistics from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), there was a 273 percent increase in the number of men who underwent cosmetic procedures between 1997 and 2013. This increase can be attributed to a variety of things, from the growing value placed on looking younger and being in better shape to the developments for the safety and efficiency of plastic surgery.

The following were the most popular surgical and non-surgical procedures among men in 2013 (ASAPS statistics):

Surgical Procedures

Non-Surgical Procedures

  • Botulinum toxin injectables: BOTOX®, Dysport®, XEOMIN® (384,672)
  • Hyaluronic acid injectables: JUVÉDERM®, Perlane®, Restylane®, BELOTERO BALANCE® (133,173)
  • Hair removal: laser or pulsed light (128,292)
  • Photorejuvenation: intense pulsed light or IPL (43,427)
  • Chemical peels (31,398)

A Healthy and Youthful Appearance

Liposuction was the most popular surgical procedure, with eyelid surgery and nose surgery almost tied at a close second having approximately half the number of procedures. This shows the increasing desire for a slender figure and youthful, balanced facial features, even among men. The most popular non-surgical procedures reinforce the desire for a youthful face, as all of them besides hair removal are designed to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and dark spots associated with aging. Although hyaluronic acid injectables and botulinum toxin injectables both treat signs of aging in the face, BOTOX® is the most known injectable and treats the eye and forehead areas, which are areas where men commonly develop early signs of aging.

Plastic surgery is definitely not just for women, and increasing numbers of men are learning about the many benefits these procedures can offer, including increased self-esteem and confidence.
