Who is a Suitable Candidate?

A woman may consider breast augmentation procedure for a variety of reasons. The surgeon will carefully evaluate her breast anatomy, overall health status, and personal aesthetic goals before recommending this surgery. Women affected by one or more of the following conditions will usually make wonderful candidates for breast augmentation cosmetic surgery:

  • Breasts are naturally small or under-developed, which is a condition called micromastia
  • Breasts are asymmetrical
  • Breast volume has been lost following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
  • One or both breasts have congenital defects
  • Breast tissue is lost due to injury or breast cancer surgery
  • The patient simply wants more voluptuous breast appearance

Customized Treatment

Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure, which is one of the key reasons behind its popularity. The surgery can be tailored to meet the specific aesthetic needs of the patient. As a dedicated plastic surgeon, Dr. Handel remains closely involved with the patient at every stage to help her make the right choices about the procedure. He provides breast augmentation surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, California, and nearby locations.

Implant Type and Size

Breast implants are available in saline and silicone gel-filled varieties. Some of the latest implants are made with highly cohesive silicone gel core for superior aesthetics and safety. Variations in implant sizes, profiles, shapes, and textures are also available to suit the patient’s unique needs.

Implant Placement Position

Breast implants are usually placed either below the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle, behind the breast tissue. The surgeon will create the breast pocket in the appropriate location once the breast implant placement is determined in consultation with the patient.

Location of the Incisions

Breast implant incisions may be located in the armpit, along the lower border of the areola, or beneath the breast crease. In exceptional situations, a TUBA or transumbilical incision may be placed.

Procedure

Breast augmentation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. The surgeon will begin the procedure by placing the incision in the pre-decided location. A breast pocket will be created through the incision, and implant will be placed and adjusted into its position. Once the surgery is completed, the surgeon will close the incisions carefully with sutures, and cover the area with bandages.

Recovery

Mild pain and discomfort may be experienced in the first few days, which can be managed with pain medications. Most patients will be able to resume their regular activities in about 10 to 14 days. Strenuous exercises and lifting of heavy weights should be avoided for at least a month.
